September Event – Blood Mining – Analysis of the Resources Curse
September 21 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The world has made extraordinary progress since WWII in so many ways. However, the negative outcomes of foreign investment into countries with abundant natural resources are like sores that continue stubbornly to get worse. Resource wealth now powers many of the most violent and repressive regimes across the globe. Their mis-governance fuels extremism and failed states, which in turn creates problems that return to haunt those very foreign investors who start the process.
In this AMA event Prof. Leif Wenar, author of Blood Oil: Tyrants, Violence, and the Rules that Run the World will present his analysis of the resources curse, explaining why it is a blind spot in modern international law, and explaining what needs to change to start the process of alleviating it.
Paul Jourdan, fund manager at Amati Global Investors, will give an account of his discussions with Leif over the past 6 months, which have led towards defining an approach that investors can take in order to break the cycle of repression and violence."
